Okavango Delta
Journey into Africa’s Living Eden

The Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a vast, unique, and dynamic inland wetland system located in northwestern Botswana, right in the heart of the arid Kalahari Desert.

Key Features and Uniqueness

  •  Inland/Endorheic Delta: Unlike most rivers that flow into the sea, the Okavango River, which originates in the highlands of Angola, never reaches an ocean. Instead, it spreads out and dissipates its waters into the desert sands and via evaporation, forming a massive, fan-shaped alluvial fan. This makes it one of the very few large endorheic (closed drainage basin) delta systems in the world.
  •  The “Pulsing” Wetland: The most extraordinary feature is its seasonal flooding cycle. Rainfall from Angola’s highlands arrives in Botswana during the country’s dry season (roughly May to August). This influx of water expands the delta creating a dramatic life-giving oasis exactly when the surrounding Kalahari is driest.
  •  Intricate Waterways: The delta is a labyrinth of winding channels, clear lagoons, permanent swamps, and thousands of small islands (often formed on termite mounds), which shift and change annually due to the buildup of sand and vegetation. Travel within the delta is traditionally done via a mokoro, a local dugout canoe.
  •  Pristine Ecosystem: The delta is largely protected, with the Moremi Game Reserve occupying a significant portion of its area. This protection has kept the system in a near-pristine state, making it an exceptional example of the interplay between climatic, hydrological, and biological processes.

Abundant Wildlife

The annual flood transforms the delta into one of Africa’s most concentrated wildlife sanctuaries, attracting large herds of animals from the surrounding dry lands.

  • Mammals: It is a vital habitat for huge populations of African Elephant (hosting the world’s largest concentration), African Buffalo, Hippopotamus, and various antelopes like the aquatic Red Lechwe and Sitatunga. It also supports vulnerable species such as Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, and the African Wild Dog.
  •  Birds and Aquatic Life: The delta is a paradise for birdwatchers, with over 400 species, and its clear waters support a rich diversity of fish, reptiles (like Nile crocodiles), and amphibians.

Best Time to Visit

The Okavango Delta transforms throughout the year, offering distinct yet equally beautiful experiences.

May to August: Peak flood season. Channels fill with crystal-clear water, ideal for mokoro trips and cool evenings by the fire.
September to October: Excellent wildlife viewing as animals gather near permanent water.
November to April: Green season with migratory birds, newborn animals, and lush landscapes.

Jack recommends the June to August period for first-time visitors seeking the perfect mix of comfort, water levels, and wildlife encounters.

The Okavango Delta is often described as the “Jewel of the Kalahari”- a stunning emerald wetland in a landscape of red sand and desert.
